This is me experimenting with natural food colouring.
I took a tiny amount of spirulina and added it to a scoop of my vegan coconut vanilla ice cream, and this was the result – natural green ice cream.
I really couldn’t taste it at all, and if you were making a mint flavoured dish, the blue-green colour would complement it perfectly.
I also figure that if added the spirulina when I was originally blending the ice cream (or whatever I was making), it would blend in even better (without the tiny green specks).
As a kid I LOVED colouring food green, much to the dismay of my family.
So I’m kind of hoping that making foods colourful might increase the chances that the small people in my life will eat my creations, and I’m SO not keen to use regular food colourings.
And there’s heaps of ideas for different ways you can colour dishes using whole food ingredients.
Funnily enough, I find myself really nervous to try adding all kinds of strange foods to my dishes to colour them naturally, mostly because I don’t want the flavour to be ruined.
But I am definitely going to keep experimenting, because it’s fun!
