I have to admit, I’m a little excited.
I took the plunge and ordered both of Chef Amber Shea‘s cookbooks – Practically Raw and Practically Raw Desserts, and they’ve finally arrived!
As much as I love trawling the internet looking for recipe ideas, there’s nothing better than a great cookbook with solid recipes and great photos.
Once you’ve tried a few dishes, you get to know a person’s style, and whether you’re likely to enjoy the recipes they offer.
And I love Amber’s approach to raw – it’s flexible and practical.
No snobbery, fanaticism or rules. Just great food, using whole, mostly raw, mostly vegan ingredients, resulting in delicious dishes that are good for you, while being free of many common problem-foods.
All of her dessert recipes are free of gluten, wheat, soy, refined sugars and flours, yeast, starches, gums, corn and peanuts, plus many of her recipes are also free of grains, oils, nuts and added sugar.
She also avoids many of the typically hard-to-find raw ingredients, minimises the use of specialised equipment, and offers heaps of substitution options and alternatives wherever possible (including cooked and baked options).
Amber’s style of cooking is fast and forgiving, which suits me very well. In fact, she describes her books as a “judgement-free zone”, and I have to say, I like the sound of that!
So now I get to work my way through her magnificent collection of recipes, and share my creations with you.
Watch this space. It’s going to be fun :D
